The Canaveral Barge Canal allows Atlantic Ocean vessels to transverse Merritt Island and enter the Indian River Intracoastal Waterway.
The Canaveral Barge Canal cuts thru Merritt Island, Florida to connect the Banana River and Indian River in Brevard County.
Coordinates: 28°24'33.9"N 80°41'23.2"W GIS:28.409420,-80.689766
Oceangoing vessels may request an opening of the triple-leaf drawspan Canaveral Locks Bridge, to access the Banana River through the Canaveral Lock. Once through the lock, ships carrying spacecraft head north on the Banana River to Kennedy Space Center. Other vessels head westward across the Banana River using the Canaveral Barge Channel, then transverse Merritt Island via the Canaveral Barge Canal, which exits into the Indian River and the Intracoastal Waterway.
