The Marine Resources Council (MRC) executive Director, Dr. Leesa Souto, will present the Indian River Lagoon’s 3rd Annual “Lagoon Report Card” at the Space Coast Progressive Alliance virtual “Zoom” event at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 7th 2021.

Dr. Leesa Souto is one of Florida’s most respected experts on environment issues, and is an interesting and entertaining speaker. The Marine Resources Council is a powerful and independent advocate for the lagoon, and for our offshore population of Southern Right Whales, as well as many other important environmental issues.
Most of us who live along the Space Coast love our Indian River Lagoon estuary, and have been very concerned to see its health decline over recent decades. Long time Florida natives love to tell stories of how crystal-clear the water used to be. Seventy years ago, fish life, dolphins, manatees, and sea grasses flourished and were abundant in a balanced ecosystem. Sadly, as human populations have grown exponentially along our coast, disease and decline have followed.

Dr. Souto and her MRC team have created a “IRL Report Card” to inform and alert citizens and government leaders to the health of our IRL. The report distills a year’s worth of research and monitoring into a clear, easy to read format that any of us can understand. After her presentation, Dr. Souto will answer questions from our Zoom audience.
