June 16, 1927
Banana River, Brevard County - On June 16, 1927, John R. Mathers completed his wooden toll bridge across the Banana River lagoon between Merritt Island and Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. The manually operated swing bridge was the first roadway connection between Merritt Island and the beach barrier island.
